Always An Artist - Week 46

How To Be Romantic has come to an end (for now).

We played for two nights at the Voila Festival, and the show was absolutely charming. I'm indebted to my wonderful collaborators, soprano Valerie Wong and repetiteur Phoebe Tak Man Chow, for their wonderful performances and dedication to the project. It really fulfilled my hopes for the whole thing from its conception to final product.

As an artist, it was a success. As a producer, many may call it a failure. Our audiences were small, I'm not aware of any press coverage, and financially we made a loss. However, our big goals for this limited run were to bring the show into existence and launch it as a commercial product. On those points, we had more success. We filmed our opening night, and the footage is available to any interested programmers. Do get in touch!

The show was a big experiment in how to make opera work for people who are unfamiliar with the genre. On this point as well, I believe we have been successful. Lots the feedback was about how relatable and truthful the show felt. Our audiences connected to it, and that's always my top goal as an artist. Onwards!
